How to pick a colour from an image
- Add your image. Choose a photo, or copy a screenshot and paste it with Ctrl+V (⌘V on a Mac). iPhone HEIC photos work too.
- Aim with the magnifier. Move over the photo and the magnifier shows the exact pixels under your pointer, with the colour and its name beside it. On a phone, drag your finger.
- Click to pick, then copy. Each pick is pinned on the photo and added to your list. Copy any code, or copy the whole list as CSS.
Good to know
- Every format at once. HEX, RGB, HSL, CMYK and OKLCH, each with its own copy button, plus the nearest CSS colour name.
- Readable text check. It shows the contrast of white and black text on the colour, and whether that passes the WCAG AA level for normal or large text.
- Palettes. Shades and tints of the colour and matching harmonies, plus the main colours found in your photo.
- Pick from your screen. In browsers that support it (Chrome and Edge on desktop), “Pick from screen” lets you sample a colour anywhere on your screen, outside this page too.
- Keyboard friendly. Tab to the photo, move with the arrow keys (hold Shift for ten pixels at a time) and press Enter to pick.
- CMYK is an estimate. It’s calculated from RGB without a printer profile, so ask your printer for exact values.
Your photo stays on your device
The image is drawn into a canvas inside this browser tab and every colour is read from there. Nothing is sent to a server, which makes it safe for unreleased designs, client work and private photos.
The page’s security policy tells your browser to block uploads, so the image can’t leave your device even by accident. You can check: open your browser’s developer tools, watch the Network tab, and pick a few colours. How InTheTab works

Questions
How do I get the HEX code of a colour in an image?
Add the image, move over it until the magnifier is on the colour you want, and click. The HEX code appears at the top of the code list with a copy button. Hovering already shows the HEX code next to the magnifier before you click.
Can I pick a colour from a screenshot?
Yes. Take the screenshot, copy it to your clipboard and press Ctrl+V (⌘V on a Mac) on this page. In Chrome and Edge you can also use “Pick from screen” to sample any colour on your screen directly.
Why is the colour slightly different from what I expected?
Photos are made of many slightly different pixels, especially around edges and in shadows. The magnifier shows exactly which pixel you’re on, so zoom in on a flat area of the colour. JPEG compression can also shift colours a little.
Do I need to install anything or sign up?
No. It runs in any modern browser on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android or iPhone. It’s free and there’s no sign-up.
